Oklahoman Editorial: Ignore Him
YESTERDAY was to be the first full day of the new law banning cockfighting, as approved by voters. No surprise, of course, that cockfighters vow attempts to soften the law's effects.
But we hope the new Legislature will pay little heed to one of their brood, Sen. Frank Shurden, who says he'll introduce legislation next year to reduce the penalties for cockfighting.
The Henryetta Democrat has fought attempts to ban
cockfighting for years and was mostly successful, until last week.
Oklahomans have spoken and want the "sport" outlawed. Legislators
and the new governor have plenty of challenges in upcoming months,
and they shouldn't be burdened again on this issue.
